Buying Your First RV: A Guide for the Aspiring Camper

An RV driving in a freeway along mountains

You want to go travelling and see the world, but you don’t want to spend money on hotels and you don’t want to spend your nights camping on the cold, hard ground in a tent. The solution you’ve found is to get an RV – a home that you can take with you on the road.

In this blog, we’ll talk about what factors you should consider when buying your first RV.

Types of RVs

  • Class A – these are the big motorhomes, the epitome of luxury RVs. They can be gas or diesel powered and are perfect for a full-time RV user.

  • Class B – these are camper vans, an RV built on a van chassis. They’re light and nimble but aren’t as luxurious as Class A.

  • Class C – a smaller type of RV, usually built on a truck chassis. They have that distinctive cab-over profile that makes them very recognizable.

What Factors You Should Consider

Buying an RV doesn’t mean just putting money down on the first one that catches your eye. Each RV has different features and specs that are suited for a variety of different needs. Some major factors that you should include into your calculations are:

Size

Size is a big consideration when buying an RV. If it’s just you and a partner travelling together, you might be okay with a smaller model. However, if you have more people coming with you, perhaps a whole family trip, then you’ll want to look at larger models with more accommodations.

Features

You should consider creating a list of features you want in your RV.

Do you want to be able to cook food and take a hot shower on a regular basis? You’ll be looking for models that have full bathroom facilities and a built-in oven or stove. However, living without these luxuries does mean a reduced cost, so it’s important to consider how much you need them.

Do you plan on spending time in hot places? Make sure a good AC is on your list. Want to travel in snowy climes? Heating systems should be a big priority. You want to be comfortable, after all.

Budget

What is your budget? RVs can range in cost from a few thousand to nearly a hundred thousand dollars, depending on the features, specs, and whether you buy new or used. You should have a budget in mind to ensure you don’t spend too much on features you don’t actually need.

Purpose

How you plan on using it is one of the biggest things you need to consider. Do you plan on taking weekend trips? Or are you someone who wants to visit a bunch of national or provincial parks? Those are two very different types of journeys and require different RVs. Keeping your purpose in mind will help you choose the RV that best fits your needs.
